Fathers
love to dream for their sons and daughters. NFL lineman? Noted lawyer? A
successor for self-made dynasties, someone to carry on the family “trade?”
whatever the lofty dream, a wise father knows the child must not fit his own
plans, but the Lord’s purpose, for many
are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails
(Proverbs 19:21, NIV). Each of our children come with original blueprints,
not of our making, but of God’s. Nevertheless, our children look to their
fathers for the gentle guidance and approval that can only come from a man
committed to God’s own purposes. The wise father knows how to amend his own
dreams and expectations if necessary. And when he trains up a child by
heaven’s roadmap, not his own, he can take comfort and pride knowing he will
receive a “well done” by the Heavenly Father Himself. By Rebecca Barlow |
