| The
world today can be so impersonal that one person might make an
assessment with no real idea of what another person actually
faces. When I am fearful or in despair I notice that those telling
me to “Have faith” are usually standing in places where the
storm is not raging. “Have faith!” sure, why didn’t I think
of that? Instead, I often do as Peter did. With good intentions, I
seek God’s guarantees in advance. I step out, then remember my
own weakness and begin sinking. Lord, save me (Matthew
14:30, NIV). I cry like Peter. And the next time I’m in the boat
I try again. I would love to have unshakable trust in God, but it
will not result from someone else’s standing safely in the boat
exhorting me to have faith. When I fear for my life, I want
God...standing in the storm beside me.
