The way we perceive something influences our entire life. We may look at a fence and draw vastly different conclusions. One may find the fence restrictive and stifling. It keeps us away from something on the other side that we find appealing. This view gives rise to feelings of resentment and deprivation. The opposing view is to see the fence as a haven, keeping something harmful away from us. A sense of peace and safety prevails. The fence has not changed, only our reaction to it. Response to God’s Word is also influenced by the way we perceive it. We can consider His Word burdensome and restrictive, resulting in a grudging attempt to serve Him. Or we can see God’s Word as a blueprint for life, bringing joy and fellowship. The psalmist exclaimed, How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (Psalm 119:103).
